Learning Can Be Fun

So I’m sitting in class watching the time go by and it just hit me all of a sudden. Why does school have to be so boring? Why can’t learning be fun in class? I know there are exceptions to this; some classes are fun for students. However, generally classes are not viewed as something that is fun. Personally, I don’t mind going to my classes that are fun and interactive. I do not really enjoy going to my other classes that aren’t as fun because they’re so boring that it’s hard to pay attention. My attention span is really bad so in boring classes I struggle a lot with paying attention. I feel like I would get a lot more out of my classes if my teachers found a way to make it more interesting and interactive. In my opinion the majority of classes should not be lecture style classes like they are now. Again this is all just my opinion because I know how I am. I am more likely to pay attention in an interactive class than in a large, lecture class.

Massive Open Online Courses

Okay so I had no idea there were so many resources available for web design training. This week I learned about 22 of the best and most common resources. Out of the 22 I feel that 3 of them would significantly useful to me. The first one that stood out to me was the first one on the list W3Schools. This one stood out to me because they said it “starts off in the beginning with the most basic lessons.” They also mentioned that it uses plain and simple language to explain everything. This one would be super useful to me because I have just recently started learning about these things for the first time; therefore I have no experience whatsoever. Another resource that I think would be useful to me is Don’t Fear The Internet. The thing that stands out to me about this resource is the audience at which it is aimed. They mentioned that it is “aimed at similarly creative people who have little to no desire to do web design professionally – but at the same time don’t want an ugly cookie-cutter site showcasing their work.” I feel like this applies to me because I want my blog and site to look very nice and be inviting but I don’t have a desire to do web design professionally. Another one that stands out to me is Khan Academy. I have used Khan Academy before and I am very familiar with it; of course this one stands out to me as well so I feel it would be useful to me.

CA 260 would be a little more difficult for me if it were taught entirely online. I don’t think I would enjoy this because even with the class already being blended online and in class, I sometimes get really lost or confused. I think there are some things taught in this class that need to be explained by a teacher in a person. I think students would get less from this class if it was strictly online because I don’t think they would learn as much as they can from this class.

Content Management Systems

Okay so this week I learned about content management systems. Before learning about them I was aware of one popular one called WordPress. Of course I was familiar with this one because of this blog. Content management systems make it easier for websites to update and add content (Module 7).  If I was asked to recommend a CMS to a local business that was looking to build a website I would probably recommend WordPress. If the company is not very experienced with making website then I would definitely recommend this. I would choose this one because in the article I read Tiwari states that WordPress “is simple and easy to use.” Also according to the article, it has the most options for themes and templates. This is important in my opinion because I am new to making websites and the multitude of themes and templates helped a lot when I was learning how to use it for blogging. The large number of themes and templates also allow you more options to find what fits you and the vision for your website best. Also, according to the article WordPress is also very easy to install. This may not be a big deal to many people, but I am very impatient sometimes so it’s good to know that the installation process is simple.

If the business would like to avoid having to hire someone to make their website then WordPress would definitely be great for them because if I can figure out how to use it, then anyone can. All it really takes is experimenting.

Accessibility

Okay so this week I am learning about website accessibility. I never thought about how important it was to make sure your website is accessible to as many people as possible. I never even thought about all of the different kinds of impairments that can affect internet use. I will definitely be paying more attention now to how accessible my website is. This also made me reflect on how fortunate I am and how sometimes I take that for granted. I want to make sure that everyone feels welcome and I hope that something from my site can make them smile. In order for this to happen I must make sure that I take the necessary steps towards making my site accessible to everyone. For example, I learned that I need to make sure my site is accessible to keyboard-only users. I never thought about this before. It is definitely something I’m going to keep in mind. Another thing that stuck out to me was making sure your website doesn’t start audio automatically when someone opens your site. This made me think about how annoying it is when I click on a site and the sound starts blasting before the video can even load. I wouldn’t want viewers to feel this way about my site so I am going to make sure I edit the sound to start when the viewer clicks on the video. Now that I am more aware about accessibility it is important to me that I make sure I do what I can to make my site as accessible as possible! ❤

Learning About Websites

So I sketched my website and it was more helpful than I thought it would be. It helps you to actually see the ideas that are in your head all in front of you at once. I’m definitely going to keep this in mind for any future website I make. The first tip that was mentioned that stuck out to me was the tip given about having a mini description about what your site is about under the title. It helps to let readers know what the purpose of your website is. Another tip that was given that stood out to me was using visual imagery highlighted words and bullet points to help you get your exact point across to viewers. The third tip that stood out to me was the tip about allowing separate pages for each “service.” For example, basically don’t load everything onto one page. The fourth tip that stood out was the tip about knowing and understanding your audience. This stood out to me because knowing and understanding your audience is important because it guides you on how to set up you information. The fifth tip that stood out was the tip that stated organize content into logical categories. This stood out to me because this affects how clear and affective your website is.

Learning About Blogging

Blogging is actually more difficult than I thought it would be. There are so many different editing options that it becomes overwhelming. So when I saw that the module this week was about the dos and don’ts of blogging I was relieved because I could use a little guidance. The dos and don’ts are very helpful because they help show me upfront what I should avoid when blogging. I want to make sure that my blog is simple, yet fun. Another thing that is important to me is making sure my blog is personalized, yet relatable. This is such a new, fun way of learning. I can apply the blogging dos and don’ts to my desired career field because I can use the guidelines for blogging in everyday communication situations.  Therefore, this is perfect because I want to work in the communications field. I know that’s very broad but I’m not very picky so I’m open to working anywhere related to communications and even business as well. One thing I learned about this week that I will apply To my blog post  from now on is the importance of planning. After reading all about planning I understand that I need to apply this to my blog posts to make sure they are readable and interesting to my audience. Another thing I read about that stuck out to me was “be relatable, be yourself.” This stuck out to me because I’m a huge advocate for being yourself and loving yourself. I’m hoping that through all of my blog posts my audience can see some who I am. However, also I’m hoping that they can see how comfortable I am with being myself and hopefully that will encourage them to be themselves.
